2019 Falling in Love with English Camp

(4-Year College Program)

Good (morning/afternoon), everyone. Welcome to Falling in Love with English Camp. Are you excited? Or are you nervous about your new life?

Don’t be afraid to speak up.

I am the President of Wenzao. My name is Mei-hua Chen. I have been in this school for a long time and I hope you will enjoy your time here as much as I do.

When you come to Wenzao University, you may wonder about its name. What is “Wenzao”? Is it related to language語文? Actually, Wenzao is taken from the name羅文藻, who was the first Chinese bishop主教in history. You will see the statue of him in front of Wenyuan. Yes, we are a Catholic university that believes in the well-being of all people in this global village.

Our complete name in English is Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages. Here is a new word for you, “Ursuline.” What is “Ursuline”? Our university was founded by the Sisters of the Ursuline Order 吳甦樂修會. It is an organization with a long history. Ursuline education began about 500 years ago. Now there are many Ursuline schools in Europe, in the US, and in many parts of the world, all with very good reputation for teaching. Today the word “Ursuline” is the same as quality education. You will be proud of this tradition and treasure the chance of studying here after you learn more about it later on.

What exactly is Ursuline education? To make it easier for you to understand, I will use 3 Ls: i.e., Life, Language, and Leadership. The first L is “Life”; it means you will find the goals of your life. You are a part of God’s beautiful creation. Therefore, you need to discover more about yourself, respect the life of other people, and love other forms of life in the natural world.

And the second L is “Language”; it means you will learn not only English and other foreign languages but also your own culture and language more deeply. By mastering excellent language skills, you will be able to communicate clearly with other people, especially to deliver loudly what is true, kind, and beautiful.

The last L is “Leadership”; in Wenzao, leaders are people who serve others. You will set good examples for your friends and classmates, help them to become as successful as you are, and encourage them in times of trouble. Wenzaorian leadership is built up on mutual trust and humble service for others in the framework of collaboration.

Facing the Age of Artificial Intelligence, we have to be ready with proper competence. Robotic machines may take over many jobs in the future but they can never replace us, because we are able to do more analytical and critical thinking, to select and integrate information efficiently, and to interpret wisely cross-disciplinary and multi-cultural findings. Therefore, when you study in Wenzao, you are at the advantage of developing your talents by learning broadly from cross-cultural topics, and by gaining insights from humanity studies.

Before ending my speech, I would like to congratulate you that you have made a wise decision to come to the camp. Although many of you might have heard bad comments about the camp, and some have decided not to come, for you who came, I think you have already earned a ticket to future global citizenship because you are the ones who seize the opportunity to better yourselves, who are eager to meet friends and work together, whose social ties are strong, and who want to challenge potentiality.

Now I have shared with you the keys to success in Wenzao and it is time for you to open the gates of 3 Ls to embrace Life, Language and Leadership. I wish you all a great time in this camp as a good beginning of your brand new life.
