It aims to create an opportunity for the members of the campus ministry and faculty to reflect on how to build a culture of care on campus and foster whole person education in a time of crisis.

Spiritual Life Coaching: Cultivating Empathy as Practice of Incarnation

Life guidance through counseling at universities is often conducted amid a pathological basis. In particular, it is considered that students visit the student counseling office only when they have depression or compulsion in Korean situations. However, I would like to note that the concept of ‘coaching’ has recently become a service for individual growth and change from a positive psychological point of view. Coaching has been introduced to companies as a business coaching service and schools as a career coaching service for students. As a result, I believe that a new method of coaching can be actively used for the spiritual growth and spiritual formation of college students in the university's chaplain’s office. If university Chaplains can serve as ‘spiritual life coaches’ for college students, they can start with a positive foundation from listening deeply and empathizing with the emotional experiences students experience in their daily lives. How could chaplains practice the ‘ability to step into the student’s shoes’ in an empathic way? Empathy can be a shared experience of God, who had incarnated, even into the most miserable emotional world of every human being. The meeting of pastoral counseling and spiritual direction can make empathy, the most basic skill of counseling, a daily spiritual practice of incarnation.
