The Digital Dimension: Innovations in Teaching and Learning?

The pandemic has unexpectedly accelerated the digital transformation of higher education around the world. Is the increased use of digital technologies a temporary measure to curb the spread of the virus or we are discovering new opportunities to enhance the quality of teaching and learning? This session will discuss the lessons learnt in the past year, and deliberate about how teaching and learning models are likely to evolve in the future.

Higher Education’s Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic – Building a more Sustainable and Democratic Future

The COVID-19 pandemic is a watershed. Higher education had to react rapidly and make daunting decisions on how to reorganise teaching, learning, and research, as well as other activities. Institutions needed to take account of the health and safety of students and staff as well as of the approach established by public authorities for addressing the sudden health crisis. Beyond this immediate response, higher education must play a major role in helping to shape a better, more equitable and just post-COVID world.

To better understand “Higher education’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic”, the Council of Europe has published a book, co-edited by representatives from the Council, the International Consortium for Higher Education, Civic Responsibility and Democracy, and the IAU, describing the various ways in which higher education is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is designed to help universities, specifically their staff, students, and partners, contribute to a more sustainable and democratic future. Authors who contributed to the book will be webinar panelists.

Session co-organised by the Council of Europe, the International Consortium for Higher Education, Civic Responsibility and Democracy, and IAU.

Building Back Stronger: A Pivotal Year for Higher Education and Sustainable Development

Co-organised by ACU, AUF, and IAU

Universities are the key to healthier, greener, fairer and more inclusive societies – in short, to ensuring a better future for us all. Their response to the COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the crucial impact they have through teaching and research on key issues, and their engagement with local communities.

2021 is a critical year for higher education. As nations start to plan their recovery from the pandemic, there is a danger that higher education budgets will be cut – putting at risk not just an inclusive and sustainable post-COVID recovery, but also the entire education ecosystem and progress against the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In times of crisis, cooperation is more crucial than ever. The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), and the International Association of Universities (IAU) are working in partnership to advocate for higher education and its role for sustainable development at the highest levels.

This coalition of three global associations – representing more than 2,000 institutions across more than 140 countries – is calling on the sector to come together to champion, defend, and support higher education. Join this event to find out more about how higher education institutions are engaged with sustainable development.

Changing Dynamics in Academic Publishing

Session co-hosted by IAU and Center for International Higher Education, Boston College.

This webinar will focus on the “practical” impact of the dramatic changes affecting academic publishing in recent years (e.g. "open access” and its implications, changes to the role and composition of editorial boards and peer reviewers, increased competition and commercialization, and the resulting rise in predatory journals). The panel will discuss these changes from the perspective of editors, publishers and researchers, with a particular focus on those located in the global south.

Save the date! Registration details will be made available soon.
